Kristin Hokanson spent 20 years in public education as a teacher and was deeply involved with Pennsylvania’s Classrooms for the Future Initiative as a technology integration specialist in a suburban high school. She has worked with students and teachers K-12 helping them to leverage web-based tools and emerging technologies to increase rigor and student engagement. Kristin spent 8 years working with the Discovery Education Professional Development team as well as working with other organizations including November Learning and Inquiry Schools. Her specialty is training educators across the country on best practices in technology integration, especially in the areas of constructivist teaching practices in science, project based learning, and media literacy. She is currently the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at School Lane Charter School in Bensalem, PA.
As part of the Core Team and Digital Learning Coach for the Media Education Lab at The University of Rhode Island Kristin helps teachers to develop a greater understanding of media literacy and digital responsibility with regards to Copyright and Fair Use. One of the things Kristin is am most passionate about is helping teachers find ways to harness 21st Century tools to create more independent thoughtful and creative learners. In the area of math and science, Kristin has facilitated a numerous workshops helping teachers utilize STEM principals in math and science for Project based learning. She is deeply involved in the intersection of media literacy principles in support of Common Core Instruction.
Kristin has been invited to presented at many local state and national venues including the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Conference and Expo (PETE&C), NJ Educational Computing Cooperative (NJECC), New York State Association for Computers and Technology in Education (NYSCATE), PA Keystone Technology Integrator Summit, International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and Consortium for School Networking (CoSN). In 2015 Kristin served as the Program Chair for the ISTE Conference in Philadelphia. She is thrilled to be a STAR Discovery Educator, PA State Keystone Technology Integrator and a Google Certified Teacher.
In addition to her work in schools, Kristin is actively involved within the Educational Technology community. For many years she served on the board of Pennsylvania Association for Educational Communication and Technology. Kristin is actively involved in technology integration at local, state, and national levels, providing numerous workshops and presentations on variety of topics. Kristin is a chapter coauthor in What School Leaders Need to Know About Digital Technologies and Social Media. Her presentations center on getting students connected to relevant information through the purposeful use of affordable technology and tapping into the the power of multimedia and rigorous constructivist teaching practices.
Kristin holds a BS in Education from University of Delaware and M.Ed from Cabrini College with a focus on literacy. She holds a certificate as an Instructional Technology Specialist she received through Penn State University’s World Campus. In addition, Kristin holds a K-12 Principal certificate from Edinboro University.
